Provides small dark green glossy oval shaped leaves on its dense growth habit allows pruning into formal hedges, rounded shrubs, or topiaries. A cornerstone of southern gardens. Often found on historic estates in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. A very versatile and hardy evergreen for numerous uses. Detours deer due to strong unpleasant smell. Excellent privacy screen, conceal fences, foundation, edging garden beds, hedge, walkways, border, backdrop for perennial beds, and single specimen. See Specifications below. Average. Regular watering schedule during first growing season to establish deep roots. If planted in Fall, or Winter, water once every week or two. Planted in growing season, water every day or two for 3 or 4 months. If hot dray spell, water everyday for the first 3 to 4 months. More often in extreme heat or containers. Can add Root Stimulation which helps early root development and strengths roots, as well as, reduces plant shock. |
| Fertilizing | Feed in early Spring with slow release type. Keep roots cool with thick layer of mulch to retain moisture during heat of Summer and colder months of Winter. |
| Pruning | Leave unpruned for a natural look, or easily pruned into topiary, or formal hedge. Prune in late Winter, or early Spring before new growth begins. Thin out interior branches to improve air flow, and light penetration. Always use clean shears to avoid possibly spreading diseases. |
| Deer | Detours deer from other plants in your landscape since deer do not like their strong, unpleasant smell. If in a high deer area, spray every 3 to 6 months with deer repellent. |
